Ventifacts are wind-formed wind-blasted stone shards. To me they look like lips: some smiling, some grimacing. Actually, as gemstones they are not strong especially as a ring, so I've cast them in a variety of Japanese alloys: shakudo and shibuichi. These alloys were developed centuries ago and are made up of mainly copper with a small amount of gold (approx 3% - 10%) added to 'ennoble' the copper. The oxide colours now range from pink, blue to dark purple and can change over time.

Pūtahi is a taniwha who watches the happenings of people on the mudflats between the Aparima and Pourakino rivers. The green pakohe used to make this piece is specific to this area, Tihaka is one of these beaches. The golden patina has been developed through the rugged coastal cycles blowing in from Rakiura/Stewart Island.

Little did I know, when I first stepped into Fingers in 1991 and purchased my first piece, that a few years later I would study in the field of contemporary jewellery and dared to dream that maybe one day, my work would end up in this iconic space.

Puriri has the scientific name Vitex Lucens. It grows to be a large tree particularly in Auckland, Coromandel and the North. The ring features two flowers, a berry, an empty cup and stalks set in relief against a leaf. The Puriri tree flowers and fruits all year-round attracting Kereru and Tui.
I first exhibited my native flower rings in 1976 in Fingers. The first ones were engraved flat (I think Ruth has one). Four of the original rings are in the collection of the Auckland Museum. The native flower ring designs are the result of considerable research; sometimes observing and working directly from plant specimens.

The golden ratio, also known as the divine proportion, is denoted by φ and approximately equals 1.618. This mathematical proportion is found extensively in nature, art, and design. In mathematics, two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. As an architect, I often used it for its aesthetic appeal. These jade pieces represent my first exploration of the golden ratio in wearable art, creating harmonious compositions that embody a timeless principle resonating across cultures and disciplines.
All works hand-carved in mm accuracy according to the golden ratio.
