The Unique and Useless
I celebrate the "unique and useless" - those fleeting moments when numbers align,
shadows fall just so, the light's reflective flicker, or a scoria bead rolls into place without
intention. These aren't grand gestures or engineered revelations. They're quiet
synchronicities: pattern-seeking instincts masquerading as cosmic choreography.
In my practice, I honour the poetry of perception. I work with materials that resist precision
- extraterrestrial dust forged through planetary collision, volcanic fragments born of
rupture, and a rare, shaped malachite, found not through design but through the odd
collisions of circumstance. These elements are coaxed into compositions that feel inevitable,
though they are anything but. The work isn't about utility. It's about noticing.
Scoria, porous and unpredictable, carries the memory of eruption. Each bead is a remnant of
pressure and pause, shaped by indifference, chance, and time. Strung together, they form a
chain of moments that recall rare alignments - like 1:23, 22:44, or 3:33 on a clock. They
mark noticing.

Whether I'm grinding faux pearls to mimic planetary dust, adapting plumbing valves into
sculptural logic, or holding a shaped malachite that seems to echo the contours of a
forgotten orbit, I'm drawn to systems that echo the arbitrary beauty of coincidence.
Meaning doesn't arise from usefulness, but from attention - noticed in the moment,
fleeting and irreversible. It happened, and I was there to notice. So, it matters.

What does one do when, after days of intense work and a lot of silver, one realises that the idea looked much better in my head than in reality...? One worries and has a meltdown.
The silver off-cuts are blasted with intense heat until the liquid metal quivers and glows. After cooling the blob is smashed flat and squashed through the rolling mill. Drilling the holes is distressing and destroys several drill bits. Finally, the tumbler relentlessly pounds the living daylights into the beads… something beautiful has emerged.

"Act Now in your own Way" sawn into the Nickel.
For 2 years the world has watched and continues to "Watch" the city of Gaza being leveled to an ashen moonscape, the blood-soaked Genocide of its people, a graveyard for the innocent.
In disbelief, at the complacency of world leaders, I found myself returning to this statement, & decided to take my own advice, these works are my small response to 'Act Now in my own way'
I have chosen the red triangle taken from the Palestinian flag with a heart at its center, a symbol to capture the spirit of the Palestinian People.
Their resilience to endure, 76 years of oppression, stripped of human dignity, the flagrant theft of ancestral land, generation to generation, and even so their fortitude has been steadfast to continue, to remain, undefeated.
The Missile set 'Profits of Genocide' is a remake of the original with a stronger focus on the missiles being hardened & realistic as opposed to symbolic.
These I remade to convey the giving hand of supplies from global nations that have enabled the unspeakable cruelty & escalation of the last 2 years in Gaza.
Human life has become less valuable than profit.
The world has failed to stop this, & we have failed the people of Palestine.
This is humanity's wound, The dismantling of Palestine, an unforgivable legacy.

These works are part of an ongoing series started in 2023 titled "Beads for Buildings and Bodies"
Glass seed beads, a highly decorative material, are used here in a strict methodical way. Numerical sequences and elementary geometrical shapes are beaded to become objects that can be pinned on the wall as 3-dimensional material drawings as well as worn on the body in multiple ways. In this shift from architecture to body, from the wall to the chest, they transform from geometrical to flexible and changeable.

An inveterate gleaner, the re-use and re-working of found materials is central to my practice. Some materials bring an existing narrative to the work providing a point of connection for viewers, wearers and frequently for myself as the maker. My work reflects the sensations inherent in making and wearing - the texture, colour and sound of materials are important and selected with care. I am motivated by the transformative power of adornment and its ability to make a statement through the sharing of stories as a form of quiet activism.
Works in the ongoing Future Relic series are made from marine plastics collected near my home on Dharawal Country, NSW and at Yirrkala in Arnhem Land which drift on the currents from faraway places to pollute the beaches, along with car debris collected on the APY Lands in South Australia. The work reflects the contrast between the natural materials and ancient cultures bound up with this land and the imposition of other places upon it via the movement of debris and people across the oceans.
