'A Mother's Lament' Bangle. Rubies (faceted untreated), stg silver, barbed wire. $1,250
"The twisting embrace of the barbed wire tells a tale of the pain and sharp suffering caused by the turmoil of war. A pain felt by those in battle and those mothers left at home lamenting for what is lost.
Sparse drops of scarlet rubies offer a glimmer of colour and hope amongst the darkness, an oxymoron of a brighter tomorrow against the blood of fallen sons and husbands that a mother laments." Ode by Rupert Moran Adcock

Gareth Barlow
Gareth Barlow is a New Zealand carver whose work honours the spiritual and cultural traditions of Aotearoa. Guided by Māori philosophies that view artists as vessels for ancestral expression, his carvings embody living connections between people, land,
and whakapapa, serving as contemporary taonga that carry stories and values forward.
In Māori traditions, carved taonga hold great spiritual and cultural significance. They embody mauri (life force), mana (prestige/authority), and whakapapa (genealogical connections). It is far more than a mere physical object, they are considered a living entity and a link to ancestors and the natural world.
These taonga explore the art of storytelling and the significance of oral traditions in everyday life, keeping the energy of past generations alive through the retelling of stories and memories. Each piece takes the form of a different animal, representing traits we aspire to as people:
Te Whai (The Stingray): Grace and elegance
Te Mangopare (The Hammerhead Shark): Agility and tenacity
Te Ruru (The Morepork): Knowledge and wisdom
Te Kārearea (The NZ Falcon): Speed and foresight
The central circle symbolizes the mouth, the vehicle for oral traditions, and is flanked by notching representing whakapapa. Each section contains three notches, reflecting the birth, life, and death of a generation. These guide the presence of ancestors to support the stories we carry forward.
The detailing incorporates pakati and haehae, each with their own whakapapa, combining to create movement and animation in the taonga, essentially bringing them to life. This energy generates mauri ora, fostering confidence in the presence of ancestors and, in turn, supporting prosperity.

Fused Cont
In a world where it seems our moves are more and more controlled I crave to find shapes which are reimagined. The process of fusing is a technique which allows me to directly with my torch render more organic and spontaneous forms. All the pieces in this body of work bare elements of the fused silver cell like structures, the designs are then explored further by combining one-off hand shaped pieces of Jade.

Fused Cont 1. Pounamu, reclaimed and stg silver, 100x15mm $700

Tau Ceti. Raukaraka Pounamu. $3,350
This large Moebius Star Knot is named after the Yellow Dwarf star in the constellation Cetus. A Moebius Strip is a mathematical object that has only one face and one side.
Sirius. Dark Kawakawa Pounamu $2,900
This small Moebius Star Knot is named after the Dog star, Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, due to the great contrast created between the dark jade and the negative space.

Icarus. Kahotea Pounamu $1,290
This piecetalks about the legendary story, Icarus, in Greek mythology. Reminding us not to fly too high to the sun, for fear of melting what holds us together. But also not too low, lest the salt spray dampen our feathers and weigh us down.
Folded. Kawakawa Pounamu from Te Tauihu $640
This is first in a new series. Folded plays on one of the core principles that features through out my work. Playing with the contrast between the malleability of my designs and the medium I use to create.

Knotted. Flower Jade Pounamu $750
Knotted is a continuation in the woodgrain series. This piece focuses on the knots found in wood once its been milled. The remnants of branches, which leave us a permanent reminder of the growth that’s essential to living.
Cenote. Raukaraka Pounamu $770
This piece shows the depth that lies within, hidden from view until something comes along to open it.

Doline. Inanga Pounamu $750
Another piece in the Cenote series. It’s natural shape, which is reminiscent of Pipi shells, shows us that while a hard outer shell can protect us, sometimes it needs to be broken so we can let what is within us shine.
Ebb. Te Tauihu Pounamu $620
A continuation in the Ripple series. This represents a period of change, just like when the tide ebbs and recedes back into the sea.

Flow. Kawakawa Pounamu with dendritic inclusions from Te Tauihu $620
Flow is the perception of surrendering yourself to what may come. Wading against the flow will only bring more stuggle, but if we move with it, we will often discover that it was something to follow, and not to overcome.
Wreath. Australian Black Jade $1,320
A Bi disk wreath featuring four feathers, this design speaks about the acceptance of loss, of coming to terms with it so we can find the centre within us again.

"SINGING NECKWEAR" series
I sing.
I have always sung in choirs and ensembles.
Some say, I sung before I talked.
I sing while I make.
In this series, I made the decision to use vocables from songs that many people know.
Vocables are sounds that are used like words or lyrics, but have no lexical meaning.
The idea that a necklace can lead to an impromptu singalong delights me, because communal singing encourages world peace.

‘Drift Lines’ body of work is an exploration of place — of living, walking, and observing. The series began a few years ago when I moved from Australia to Aotearoa New Zealand. Though close in distance, the two countries felt strikingly different, especially in their unique flora, fauna, and coastlines.
I settled in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, a city cradled by beaches and bays. Each day, I walked — to see, to understand, and to find my sense of belonging in this new landscape.
Along the way, I began collecting objects that felt unfamiliar yet grounding. Scallop shells became a quiet fascination. One particular beach near my home was rich with them — a place where I would often gather these delicate forms just before the tide reclaimed them.
Back in my studio, I began sketching these shells, treating each drawing one like a portrait — a record of a fleeting encounter. These drawings then evolved into three-dimensional wire sculptures, shaped by hand and inspired by the natural curves and lines of the shells themselves.
This series of wire drawings is my offering — a collection that began on the shores of Aotearoa.

Heirlooms and urban amulets, these works merge domestic and industrial motifs. Crafted from cow horn sourced from my family's former four-generation Pūhoi farm, the material was passed down by my father. Honoring this lineage, I tinted the darker horn with an iron-water dye made from the farm's rusty chains.

An inveterate gleaner, the re-use and re-working of found materials is central to my practice. Some materials bring an existing narrative to the work providing a point of connection for viewers, wearers and frequently for myself as the maker. My work reflects the sensations inherent in making and wearing – the texture, colour and sound of materials are important and selected with care. I am motivated by the transformative power of adornment and its ability to make a statement through the sharing of stories as a form of quiet activism.
These works form part of ongoing pareidolic material play with marine debris collected near my home on Dharawal Country, NSW. The terracotta tile shards that wash up on the beach are post-colonial materials, perhaps made here at the brickworks that were once behind the beach, or imported from Europe. Unsettled materials for shelter reimagined as wearable companions.

Memory Fragment Brooches, 2026
In 2025 I undertook an artist residency in Taiwan. During this time I collected small details and patterns, searching for strands of recognition to anchor myself in an unfamiliar land. Upon returning to Aotearoa, my memory fragments and rearranges itself.
