Joel Fitzwell

Joel Fitzwell is a goldsmith based in Whakatū (Nelson), who completed a Bachelor of Art and Media at NMIT in 2012, majoring in Contemporary Jewellery, and completed a trade certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery with JIRBNZ in 2018.

Working primarily with precious metals, Joel is a process-based maker who enjoys exploring traditional goldsmithing techniques such as construction, repoussé, granulation, setting, and engraving to craft intricate, one-of-a-kind pieces.

With an eye for patterns and repetition, Joel often works within self-set parameters, such as limits on size, shape, and material. The act of making rules before starting a new project helps to provide structure regarding the unlimited possibilities of what to make.

"35X" exhibition, July 2025

The series 35X acts as a physical sketchbook, capturing Joel’s exploration of techniques and ideas in a tangible form, offering a snapshot of his distinct method, emphasizing the importance of materials, processes, and craftsmanship within his ongoing artistic practice.

Each brooch measures 35 x 35mm, serving as a small yet significant reflection of his artistic style.
