Introducing Joel Fitzwell
"35X" - July 2025

Joel Fitzwell is a goldsmith based in Whakatū (Nelson), who completed a Bachelor of Art and Media at NMIT in 2012, majoring in Contemporary Jewellery, and completed a trade certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery with JIRBNZ in 2018.

The series 35X acts as a physical sketchbook, capturing Joel’s exploration of techniques and ideas in a tangible form, offering a snapshot of his distinct method, emphasizing the importance of materials, processes, and craftsmanship within his ongoing artistic practice.
Each brooch measures 35 x 35mm, serving as a small yet significant reflection of his artistic style.

Anthropomorphising the building blocks for child development and play formalised by the founder of the Kindergarten system (Friedrick Froebel) in the early 1800s through a series of ‘gifts'. These works play with the shapes from gift#2 – circles, squares and triangles.
